CAFE — cellular automaton coupled to finite elements for corrosion

Find a project summary below — a more detailed version is coming soon.

A coupling loop between an existing cellular automaton framework and Abaqus, so that the mechanical stress field feeds back into the probability of electrochemical dissolution.

The loop

  • Automated input file generation after a few automaton generations (5 to 10), meshing a 2D plate under lateral loading
  • Static analysis and extraction of the nodal stresses
  • Stresses correlated with the automaton cells to raise the local dissolution probability
  • Corrosion propagation restarted — a mechanical stress ↔ electrochemical dissolution loop
  • Studies of different ferritic and austenitic phase distributions as the initial grids for a run
